BC Hydro changing outdated policy

PRINCE GEORGE – With B.C’s increasing housing needs B.C Hydro has made important changes to it’s nearly two decade old Distribution Extension Policy.

BC Hydro has changed the policy regarding electricity connections to new homes and businesses throughout the province in response to a 30% increase in recent years. The update is designed to simplify the connection process and reduce costs. For Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs Ravi Kahlon the changes will make a real difference for families and builders.

“Lower connection costs and faster timelines mean it’s easier to build the homes people need, and to do it more affordably in communities around British Columbia.” said Kahlon

The Distribution Extension Policy was last amended in 2008 and required the first customer requesting an extension to pay the full cost of system upgrades which largely benefitted future users.

The Changes took effect on July 5th, 2025 and with the revised policy now in place the cost will be spread out broadly in addition to BC Hydro’s commitment to increase it’s contribution to covering more of the cost.
