RCMP seek witnesses after man found dead on George Street

PRINCE GEORGE — One man was found dead on George Street on July 4 in what Prince George RCMP say may be the result of an assault that morning.

The initial investigation began just after 4:00 a.m. when a witness reported seeing a man get hit over the head with a baseball bat near the 100-block of George Street. When police officers attended, neither the victim nor the assailant were able to be located.

“Surveillance from this initial investigation shows a man wearing a black jacket, white t-shirt and black pants get assaulted by another man wearing a black, long-sleeved shirt and jeans. We are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed this event or who knows who the victim or suspect are,” states Corporal Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.

Police were called to the same area two hours later, for a report of a man who had collapsed on the ground. The man was transported to the hospital; unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries.

Cooper says investigators have reason to suspect that the deceased may have been the victim of a second assault that is related to the initial investigation. Police officers would like to speak with anyone who knows what happened to the deceased in the two hours between the initial assault and him being located unconscious on the street.
