Ballparks to receive major upgrades

PRINCE GEORGE – The City of Prince George is going to see some big upgrades to a couple of its favourite ballparks this summer. Renovations are underway on Spruce City Stadium and Freeman Park thanks in part to annual funding provided through the Canada Community-Building Fund. The fund helps with many projects including the City’s annual ball diamond and sports facilities renewal program. The grant will contribute $760,000 to a total budget of $950,000 with a focus on improving the facilities and increasing their use. As City Councillor Tim Bennett says, the funds will be put to great use.

“We’re really fortunate as part of the provincial government’s commitment to municipalities to once again receive funding to help improve some of our recreational facilities here in town. If you were out at many of our ball diamonds this year, you would have seen upgrades to many of the facilities at our ball diamonds. This year the funding is been secured and will be used to help improve lighting at those facilities as a way to help prolong the life of those facilities and to improve overall safety in the area.” says Bennett.

The program aims to refurbish multiple sports facilities yearly based on the city’s 2018 ball diamond and sports field strategy. With many of Prince George’s outdoor facilities built decades ago and in need of upgrades there is a commitment to modernize those spaces to provide better use and longevity.

“Our facility staff work with our capital planning department to outline where the needs are, and what kind of upgrades need to be done. After that there is a prioritization list that they go by with the ultimate goal of making sure that we have state of the art facilities for our residents to use. we will also continue to address some of the ongoing needs that come up, whether it’s for security, usability or just to help make the facilities that much better to help attract great events like we just had with the summer Special Olympics.” added Bennett.

In 2024, a identical grant was divided up with upgrades going to Gyro Park, Harry Loader Park, Ron Wiley Field and Freeman Park .
