Obstetric services may be reduced at UHNBC in August

PRINCE GEORGE — Northern Health has notified pregnant residents in northern British Columbia that there will be gaps in obstetrical specialist coverage at UHNBC in August, potentially leading to service reductions, where patients may have to be transferred to another facility.

Northern Health says that UHNBC is experiencing a shortage of Royal College Obstetrical specialists that provide care and consultative services to high-risk pregnant individuals.

UHNBC’s obstetrician service coverage provides surgical and specialized procedural care when family practice OB’s and midwives encounter complications.

Gaps in coverage may lead to Northern Health needing to transfer a pregnant individual to another centre in the province, at no cost to the patient, to ensure their safety and that of the baby.

Northern Health is noting that the Labour and Delivery Department at UHNBC remains and will remain open 24/7.

In a news release, the BC Conservatives say he notice confirms that some patients may need to be transferred, potentially hundreds of kilometres away, for safe delivery.

The party points out that UHNBC is the only tertiary care hospital for obstetrics.

Prince George-Valemount Conservative MLA Rosalyn Bird says it demonstrates that rural British Columbians are being treated “like second class citizens”.
