Annual Special Olympics golf fundraiser brings immense support to local athletes

PRINCE GEORGE – The annual Special Olympics Prince George golf fundraiser was held Friday at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club. It brought 108 golfers divided into 27 teams, alongside 10 Special Olympics athletes, to compete in a fun atmosphere dedicated to ensuring Special Olympics programs can continue.

“The funding all does stay in Prince George and goes to the Prince George athletes, which is for their travel and hotels and all of their expenses that they require when they’re traveling. It’s a great way to raise money for the local program,” said Karen Emerson, the tournament organizer.

Every year this raises around $100,00 for Special Olympics Prince George, and the fundraising is done through entry fees, donations, sponsors, and a silent auction. However, the additional fundraising method is one that is unique to this tournament, being the fact you can donate to a Special Olympics athlete and they will hit a shot for you.

“We set up the athletes on holes to take drives, people will donate and pick one of the athletes to hit the ball for them. That gets the athletes involved in tournaments, and they also do putting, then the athletes kind of make their own fun with it as well,” Emerson said.

One of the athletes is Josh Pudney, a gold medalist at the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games. He was really excited not only about his gold medal, but to showcase what he and all the athletes can do.

“(I’m excited) to meet new people, to show them what we can do. I’m excited to hit some drives, and hopefully they go my way,” Pudney said.

The final tally for how much was raised is still unknown, but it was certainly an enjoyable day for all involved who spent a nice day golfing alongside Special Olympics athletes.
