Designated downtown cooling centres ready to support residents during heatwave

PRINCE GEORGE – As the temperatures begin to rise, the City of Prince George is ready to take proactive measures. If needed, there’s a plan to open cooling centers aimed at helping residents cope with the intense heat. These centers will provide safe, air-conditioned environments where individuals can relax, hydrate, and find relief from the sweltering conditions.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Prince George and its neighbouring regions over the coming days. The city of Prince George is reviewing their list of cooling centres to help residents cope with the rising temperatures.

“Basically, what we’re waiting for is if we have daytime temperatures over 29 degrees and nighttime temperatures over 14, that allows us to access provincial funding to support cooling centers in our area.”

Tanya Spooner

Manager of Emergency Programs at City of Prince George

According to Environment Canada, a heat warning is issued when the temperatures hit around 30 degrees during the day and 14 degrees at night.

Annually, the city continues to help manage cooling centres throughout the downtown for those who struggle to find a place to get away from the heat.

Designated downtown cooling centres

  • POUNDS
  • BC Schizophrenia Society
  • The Fire Pit
  • Central Interior Native Health Society
  • Prince George Council of Seniors

The high temperatures are expected to come down by the end of the week.

“ As we get into the weekend, things become a bit more unsettled. Temperatures are going to be out or maybe even a degree below seasonal norms. But, you know, still generally summery type weather.”

Matt Loney

Meteorologist, Environment Canada

Officials stress the importance of being prepared with a cooling plan for any upcoming heat warnings.
