IIO refers investigation of PG shooting to BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges

Jul 30, 2025 | 1:30 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC believes reasonable grounds exist that one police officer may have committed an offence in relation to a shooting that occurred in Prince George just over four years ago.

Just before 7 a.m. on May 31, 2021, police approached a man near the North Starr Inn near Victoria Street and 15 Avenue.

During the interaction that followed, shots were fired by police, and the man sustained a serious gunshot injury.

Upon completion of the investigation, Chief Civilian Director Jessica Berglund reviewed the evidence and determined that reasonable grounds exist to believe that one officer may have committed an offence in relation to the use of a firearm. As a result, and pursuant to Section 38.11 of the Police Act, the IIO has forwarded a report to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.

In order to approve any charges, the BC Prosecution Service must be satisfied that there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered by the IIO, and that prosecution be required in the public interest.

Charges were laid against the man who was shot by police during the same altercation.

The B.C. Prosecution Service approved the following charges against 36 year old Fort St. James resident, Thomas Arthur Prince:

  • Attempted murder
  • Aggravated assault of a police officer
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Resisting arrest

Thomas Prince was apprehended on an arrest warrant for these charges on February 28, 2023, and this matter is now before the courts.
