Evacuation order and alert issued for Dorman Lake wildfire 20 km south of Fraser Lake

VANDERHOOF — The Dorman Lake wildfire has prompted the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) to issue an evacuation order and alert on Monday (Aug.4).

The BC Wildfire Service says the fire is located 20 kilometres south of Fraser Lake and is estimated at 319 hectares in size and is classified as out-of-control.

Smoke is visible in Fraser Lake, Vanderhoof, and from Highway 16 West. Crews, aircraft, and equipment are on scene.

The fire was discovered on August 1 and is believed to be lightning-caused. Ten properties are affected by the evacuation order and four by the evacuation alert.

Those living in the evacuation order area must leave the area immediately. Persons who disregard this evacuation order do so at their own risk. The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako may be unable to assist anyone who remains in the evacuation order area.

• If you need transportation assistance from the area, please advise the individual providing this notice or call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako at 250-692-1553.

• Close all windows and doors.

• Shut off all gas and electrical appliances, other than refrigerators and freezers.

• Close gates (latch) but do not lock.

• Gather your family: take a neighbour or someone who needs help.

• Take critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, and keys) only if they are immediately available. Take pets in pet kennels or on a leash.

• Do not use more vehicles than you must.

• If you require assistance for livestock, please call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako at 250-692-1553.

Evacuees:

• Register at the Reception Centre at the Nechako Community Church, lower level at 1393 Highway 16, Vanderhoof BC or contact the Emergency Support Services Director at 778-916-1995.

• Emergency Support Services can provide food, accommodation (hotel or staying with friends and family), clothing, emotional support, and family reunification.

Those under an evacuation alert are advised to be prepared for an evacuation order:

• Locate all family members or co-workers and plan to meet outside the evacuation area, should an evacuation be called while separated.

• Gather essential items such as medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers (i.e., insurance), immediate care needs for dependents and, if you choose, keepsakes (photographs, etc.), and have these items readily available for quick departure.

• Prepare to move any persons with mobility challenges and/or children.

• Move pets and livestock to a safe area. If you require assistance, please call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako.

• Arrange to transport your household members or co-workers in the event of an evacuation order. If you are asked to evacuate and need transportation assistance from the area, please call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako.

• Arrange accommodation for your family if possible. In the event of an evacuation order, a Reception Centre will be opened if required, and evacuation routes specified.
