Evacuation alert issued for Sam Ross Creek wildfire near Fraser Lake

FRASER LAKE — An evacuation alert has been issued for the Sam Ross Creek wildfire near Fraser Lake.

It was issued by the Village of Fraser Lake and the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN).

The lightning-caused seven hectare fire was discovered on Monday and is classified as out-of-control.

The BC Wildfire Service has sent the following resources to fight the blaze:

  • Air tankers to surround the fire with retardant.
  • Skimmers to cool the fire while crews performed their duties.
  • Access remains a challenge. Two Parattack Crews are planning to jump to a location near to the fire.
  • One Initial Attack Crew worked through the night along side machinery as they opened access into the fire.
  • A night vision helicopter will also be arriving last night to drop water for part of the night.

A total of 299 properties are affected by the evacuation alert. Those under alert should be prepared for an evacuation order:

• Locate all family members or co-workers and plan to meet outside the evacuation area, should an evacuation be called while separated.

• Gather essential items such as medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers (i.e., insurance), immediate care needs for dependents and, if you choose, keepsakes (photographs, etc.), and have these items readily available for quick departure.

• Prepare to move any persons with mobility challenges and/or children.

• Move pets and livestock to a safe area. If you require assistance, please call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako.

• Arrange to transport your household members or co-workers in the event of an evacuation order. If you are asked to evacuate and need transportation assistance from the area, please call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako.

• Arrange accommodation for your family if possible. In the event of an Evacuation Order, a Reception Centre will be opened if required, and evacuation routes specified.
