PRINCE GEORGE – Ted Price and Anne Laughlin, the founders of Miracle Theatre, are being recognized by the provincial government for their exceptional contributions to community service. The Medal of Good Citizenship has been awarded to 18 people across the province, and Price and Laughlin are among this year’s recipients.

“You never think that you’re someone special, you just do what you can do. It was an absolute surprise, and I’m very honoured,” said Laughlin.

“A phone call came out of the blue from Victoria, and when you get a call from Victoria you think, ‘oh, well, is this going to be trouble?’ But no, not at all. A very pleasant woman phoned and said that we had been nominated for this particular honour, and it was just a very nice note for the day,” Price added.

Miracle Theatre launched ten years ago, and in a decade of putting on shows and fundraising it has raised well over one million dollars for various non-profits and community causes. These include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Establishing a Prince George Emergency Seniors’ Fund
  • Helping to purchase a structural protection unit to protect homes in wildfires
  • Raising funds for Ukrainian refugees

“We did one show and we didn’t expect it to be ongoing. We started it and we called it a pilot project to see how it would go. And then it went just a little bit the same as it was when we started Theatre North West. We didn’t know what was happening, we came up here and it just took off,” Price and Laughlin said, explaining the origin of the Theatre.

It takes a lot of work putting these productions together every year, but Price and Laughlin say the incredible community support, on top of the dedicated army of volunteers, keeps them wanting to always come back for me and continue to find ways to support the community. Price recalled what first motivated Miracle Theatre’s creation, adding that memory, on top of all the other worthy causes supported by the Theatre, makes it an easy choice to continue the Theatre’s productions.

“What kind of started it was we got a flier in our mailbox asking for donations to the food bank, and they were giving warning that they’re actually going to go door to door to try to get donations. And I remember when we saw this notice, one of the things they were asking for was baby food. And it just really hit us, like what has it come to that baby food has to be solicited door to door to take care of infants? So we got the idea from there, the very first Miracle Theatre was to support children,” Price said.

The most recent Miracle Theatre fundraising campaign raised $209,433.40, which set a record high in the Theatre’s decade of productions.
