PRINCE GEORGE – Smokey skies dominated Prince George’s horizon this morning as wildfire smoke continued to be prevalent in the City with relatively little to no rain over the weekend. With all the smoke particles in the air comes risk and as Dr. Tribesty Nguyen says a number of different people are vulnerable to low air quality.

“There are a number of different people that are considered more vulnerable to wildfire smoke. So one group is young people including young children and infants. Another group is older people. There are also pregnant people and also people with certain medical conditions. More specifically, it’s people who have lung conditions, and it’s people who have heart conditions who are more vulnerable. ” says Nguyen.

Experts agree that there are a few tips when facing smoky conditions such as using masks, air filters and closing windows but Dr. Nguyen stresses creating a barrier between the smoke and your lungs is important especially for those most vulnerable.

“I think the biggest thing is to avoid exposure to the smoke as much as you can in whatever ways that you can and in particular those more vulnerable groups of people in the community. Younger people, older people, pregnant people, people with lung and heart conditions are the people that are most vulnerable. There is a higher emphasis for them to avoid the smoke exposure. The one thing that’s really important is maybe don’t go outside and if you do go outside don’t do exercise outside. ” says Nguyen.

Dr Nguyen added that there is up to the minute information on wildfire situations at www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status .
