Strike over, but trouble still remains for some travelers

PRINCE GEORGE – The Air Canada flight attendant strike has concluded, but for some Prince George travelers troubles remain. Such is the case for Arashdeep Kaur and her four year old daughter, who still haven’t been able to make it back to Prince George despite a flight that was scheduled for August 17.

“I have my daughter with me, and she just wants to go home. She was crying a lot, ‘I want to go home, I want to go home,” Kaur said.

She was in Toronto for a week for a meditation camp, and while she was able to get a flight rebooked for Edmonton, she unfortunately still remains there.

“I was just trying to be patient as much as I can, but my daughter, she misses her dad so much because he is still in Prince George. So it was just extremely stressful because she was already a week away from her dad. And all of the sudden these things happen and she was so upset,” Kaur said.

Her journey back home won’t be a flight though, as Kaur said she instead will have to drive. She looked through many options, including a train ride that was too expensive, and rental cars that were unavailable. Because of this, she went with her last option, being a U-Haul. It’s not an ideal situation, but Kaur adds one silver lining is that she has family in Toronto and Edmonton both, and she’s sympathetic to other travelers who may not have been so lucky.

“I saw other people in the airport that have no family, and they were supposed to stay in the airport, and they were unable to afford the hotel prices. It was extremely frustrating for them as well,” she said.

Kaur said she plans on driving home on August 22, five days later than her initial plans, putting her unexpected travel delay saga to an end. While she’s grateful to soon be home, she says if she could do it all over again, she wishes she had brought her passport with her.

“If anyone goes further away from an eight hour drive, just bring your passport with you. I did not bring my passport, I could’ve gone to USA then taken a flight to Vancouver because of a flight that is Vancouver to Prince George. They have a different union and they were not part of the strike
