Following big win, Kodiaks prepare to face a familiar foe

PRINCE GEORGE – Following a big win against the Langley Rams, the Prince George Kodiaks are riding high.

“It felt really good just seeing the smiles on the all the guys’ faces after the game, and I know how much it meant to these guys. Being able to go to war and come out with a victory against a good opponent and a good franchise, that was a huge momentum boost for the season,” said Kodiaks Quarterback Sawyer Thiessen.

“We’ve never beat Langley before, so getting that out of the way, we’ll be beating a lot of good teams pretty quick here that’s for sure,” added Kodiaks Defensive Back Taeman Pinnocke.

“To not only compete but be physical and be dominant and own so much of the football game, it was good for us, it was good for our kids, it was great for our fans. It was great all around, like special teams, offense and defense, they played a solid football game,” said Kodiaks Head Coach Jamie Boreham.

Boreham called the win a step that a young franchise like the Kodiaks has to take in order to become the team they want to be, and while it’s certainly worth celebrating, Boreham has also been preaching the importance of moving on and continuing to properly prepare and work on mistakes.

“We will focus on turning the page and getting on to the next part of business. And you know what? I’m sure they enjoyed Saturday night, but come Sunday and Monday, it’s time to move on,” Boreham said.

“It’s been a great week of practice, building off that high, not letting that satisfy us at all, keeping the momentum going. It’s a long season, each game is a tough game in the BCFC, so we’re just fighting for another day,” Thiessen said.

The Kodiaks next opponent is a familiar one: the Kamloops Broncos. Prince George historically has great success again Kamloops, including a 33-13 win earlier this season, and Kamloops is currently 0-4 on the season with a minus 108 point differential. Even with that in mind, the Kodiaks say they’re staying locked in to avoid a trap game.

“It’s tough to win any football game, so can’t go in there taking them lightly. They’re going to come out swinging for sure, they’re not going to take us lightly. We won’t take them lightly, we’ll just prepare like any other game,” Pinnocke said.

“You get a big win, it’s easy to have a letdown the next week, so we’ve had a couple reminders this week about what it needs to be and how it needs to be. So our guys will be ready, they’ll be focused and make sure they handle what they need to down there,” Boreham said.

Preparation and focus has been the theme of the week, and Thiessen is confident the team has taken that message to heart and will be ready for the Broncos.

“If we play our systems, results will handle themselves. We come out firing, set the tone, and if we play our game, it’ll be really tough for them to match our mentality and our physicality,” he said.

The game will take place on August 23 beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Kamloops. It will be the start of a two week road trip before the Kodiaks return to home field on September 6 to take on the Okanagan Sun.
