Prince George will be welcoming video game enthusiasts this weekend as it’s hosting it’s first video gaming expo. The VGPG is a three-day event being held at the House of Ancestors and will feature all things gaming with free-play gaming, panels, vendors, trivia, live music and the highlight of the event a fighting game tournament where competitors have the chance to take home a piece of a $5000 cash prize pool. As event Co-organizer Kelsy Polnik says this is years in the making.

“We’re doing a big video game convention in Prince George which is something I have wanted to do for years. We needed a huge venue and a place where people could kind of celebrate that culture and be immersed in it for a whole weekend. We have a big e-sports event going on with a $5,000 cash prize, and we’re going to be playing Street Fighter six, Guilty Gear Strive, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, and Rivals of Ether. ” said Polnik.

For many local gamers the event is a long time coming as smaller events have been held before with success. With video games more popular then ever the time was perfect to capitalize on the growing community and as video game enthusiast Dave Leach says the gaming community appreciates al the hard work put into the VGPG.

“We have run events before but nothing of this scale with this much involvement of of the community outside of the fighting game community. This means a as a video game player in general to see the organizers of VGPG put something like this on. All the effort that’s gone into it really is heartening. ” said Leach.

The VGPG is being hosted at the House of Ancestors from August 22nd to the 24th with weekend and single-day passes available.
