Potential record breaking heat on the way

PRINCE GEORGE- Temperatures are rising in Prince George and aren’t expected to decrease for at least a week. With the sun out in full force and no clouds in the skies Environment Canada meteorologist Matt Loney says we can expect much of the same for the foreseeable future.

“So we have this large ridge of high pressure both at the surface and upper atmosphere, which is controlling things over the next week or so and so we’re going to see temperatures that elevate over the next while. That basically puts a lid on any cloud cover that can develop and weather systems are deflected well to the north into the northern Yukon, so any weather is of hundreds and hundreds of kilometers away. ” said Loney.

Even with possible record setting daytime high temperatures there will be no heat warnings coming to Prince George. As Loney says the surprisingly low night-time temperatures play a big part in the lack of a warning.

“So the heat warning criteria is met when temperatures hit two consecutive days of 29 and overnight low of 15 degrees, so we don’t quite meet that at night. The nights are getting longer and longer, and so we’re able to cool off a bit more at night. That keeps the temperatures down below the warning criteria required for our heat partners to put out an alert. ” said Loney.

With temperatures expected to continue rising over the week a possible record breaking temperature for August may be in the cards.
