Prince George local develops free event app to better connect community

PRINCE GEORGE – A Prince George local has taken the initiative in further connecting the community by developing a new, free to download app. The “PG Social” app developed by Shrey Shrey seeks to become a hub for the community to easily post, and find, events.

“I just wanted to help out the community. I browse Reddit, and I saw a post on there where there would be newcomers to the city that would come in and they would post something like, ‘why is it so hard to find new friends in Prince George?’ Or, ‘why is it that I don’t have anything to do in Prince George?’ That was something I knew that I can help with my skills and the tools that I have,” he said.

Shrey, the developer of the app and also founder of his new company Vale Tech Inc., described the app as a passion project of his, saying he also wanted a place to easily be connected to events.

“In my personal experience, there are a lot of times where I found that an event happened a week ago, which is something that I would have been really interested in going to. But, I didn’t know about it at the time.”

The PG Social app itself is quite simple to navigate, a design choice Shrey says was intentional so that finding events wouldn’t be a hassle. With user friendliness in mind, he says there are several features where the app will help you handpick your interests so you can be pointed to specific events that best suit you.

For example, hiking is something that you could enter in as your interest. And once the app finds that there has been a new event for hiking, it will notify you that there’s this new event that’s happening. And this way, you don’t have to proactively monitor the whole list. Once you set it up, you forget it, and you basically let the app do its thing,” he said.

As for posting events, that too is a straightforward process. He says he wanted to include everyone and all interests in the community, so these events could range from large concerts to garage sales, and everything in between.

“You could have something where you create an event for that particular thing, and you choose a location where everybody could join you, maybe a pub or a bar, and you basically post that to the app, and you can basically gather all these hobbyist people,” Shrey said, explaining potential ways to use the app to meet like-minded people.
