Barkerville produces six vignettes

BARKERVILLE – Six 15-minute vignettes have been produced on the historic site that is Barkerville.

“This really came to fruition in 2021, 2022,” says Stewart Cawood, Manager of Public Programming & Media for Barkerville. “Our former CEO Kate Cox, really wanted to push for us to do something that was different from a marketing perspective and to push a series.”

Barkerville was founded in 1862 after the discovery of significant gold deposits in the Cariboo gold fields, but was destroyed by fire in 1868. It was rebuilt into what it is today. And Barkerville is now the largest living-history museum in western North America.

And making a series about that history was daunting, but satisfying.

“It was mostly two weeks that it took us to film all six. To say that it wasn’t stressful would be a lie because it’s film. And film is that way. It’s very much a hurry up and wait, and there are long days, but it is fun.”

Currently, the series can be watched on YouTube and Vimeo.

But could it possibly have a presence at places like the Vancouver International Airport? Or Tourism Prince George?

“As a Visitor Information Centre, we definitely help visitors who are coming into Prince George and then on the rest of their trip,” says Carmen Herman, Interim President & CEO for Tourism Prince George. “So if we know they’re taking the highway down that way, we highlight Barkerville, Wells, Hixon Falls, all these stops that they can make on their way to their next destination.”

But at this point, for the folks at Barkerville, YouTube and Vimeo will have to do.

“Those are certainly all possibilities for us,” says Cawood. “We’ve talked about showing them in our Welcome Centre when people come in. Historically, we’ve had videos about Barkerville playing many times throughout the years, both in our Welcome Centre up at the Theatre Royal. We’ve had all sorts of all sorts of videos being displayed. So that is definitely a possibility.”
