Copper crime surge leaves Prince George in the dark

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George RCMP has reported an increase in copper wire thefts in the area, which are having widespread consequences. Thieves are targeting both copper power cables and copper communications cables, resulting in disruptions to critical infrastructure and affecting 9-1-1 emergency services for the public.

Copper wire theft affects everyone, often resulting in costly repairs that can run businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars. We are asking the public to help by reporting any suspicious activity. If you see someone in your neighbourhood who does not appear to be a utility worker near a lamp post, power pole, or telecommunications station where copper wire may be present, report it. Call the non-emergency line to report it. Your vigilance can help prevent theft and protect our community.

Getting a good description of what the suspect looks like, what vehicle they are using and what their last known direction of travel was if they leave the area are all valuable pieces of information to make note of for police officers, as well as passing along any relevant cell phone video, dash camera footage or video surveillance.

The Prince George RCMP will be working closely with City Bylaw Services staff to enforce the Regional Automated Property Information Database program, which electronically records information on individuals who turn in second-hand property, such as copper wire.
