PRINCE GEORGE – The Inner City Boxing Gym is buzzing with excitement, as it is only two months away from hosting “Night of the Wardogs.” This event, taking place on October 25, will be Prince George’s first Olympic-style amateur event in 12 years.

“It’s a proud moment for us that we get to finally show our team to our town. Because Prince George, through our whole career, the town has always had our back, always very supportive, and now it’s really nice that we get to show them, ‘hey, this is next for you guys, this is who you guys get to cheer on next,” said Kenny Lally, co-owner of the gym.

“It’s my first exhibition here in town, my hometown, and I’m excited to fight for my friends and family. I’m going to show off my skills and put on a good show,” said Canaan Woodrow, a 17-year-old Prince George boxer.

“I’m excited to show my skills, get some opportunities, get some more fights in,” added 14-year-old Prince George boxer Adam Young.

13 matches are planned, with nine of them showcasing Prince George fighters. It’s an incredibly exciting moment for Lally and his fellow co-owner Jag Seehra, who say this was a bucket list item for them to bring back a full fight card to Prince George and help the sport grow.

“It’s nice to see that we are able to show nine youth on our first ever show that are all from Prince George, so hopefully that will draw more youth in, because of this sport offers so much opportunity. We get to travel the province, the country, and if you make it big enough, travel the world,” Lally said.

To prepare for the first card in 12 years, Lally and his team traveled to Edmonton last weekend to take on some new fighters, an event all fighters say was a great opportunity.

“When I’m here I’m only sparring with two of the same people, and when I went there I got to spar with a bunch of different types of fighters and I think that’s really good, so I got to learn how to adapt to new fighters,” said 16-year-old Prince George boxer Koehn Mcleod.

“If someone’s fighting different, I have to be able to adapt how I fight to match them so I can improve my style and hopefully get the win,” Young added.

It was a fantastic learning opportunity, and one Lally and his fighters say was also a great confidence builder, on top of also giving the Prince George fighters greater heights to aspire to.

“They were in there with higher level guys. Our guys were not the better guys here. They took some shots, they took some beatings, but that’s part of it. Now they understand that they have the capabilities and the endurance to stay in there with somebody of that stature,” Lally said.

“It was nerve wracking, but I was excited for it. It was a good welcome to the competitive aspect of boxing. And it was exactly what I needed, it went really well,” Woodrow added.

Night of the Wardogs will take place on October 25 at the Inner City Boxing Gym, with the doors opening at 6:00 p.m. and fights starting at 7:00 p.m.
