PRINCE GEORGE – It’s that time of year once again, when a batch of fresh faces show up at the College of New Caledonia. And many of them need a bit of help, which is what Tuesday was all about. It was a day of music, food and overall celebration to the start of a new year for students at the College of New Caledonia.

“I think it’s the best day of the academic year,” says Shelley Carter-Rose, Vice President of Student Affairs. “I love the fall. Students come in with lots of new thoughts and ideas and energy, and staff are excited. It’s a really good day.”

Student Ambassador Shree Srivisan says he’s always excited to see fresh faces come through the doors.

“I get to meet a lot of people. It’s a good icebreaker for me and get to know about the college and prep for my semester.”

He says after two years, he has many acquaintances, and orientation just introduces more friends.

This is orientation has a different feel from previous events. That’s because it was planned a little differently this time around.

“So this year we took a different approach,” says Carter-Rose. “So we have an orientation committee, and what they proposed is to change the process so the orientation would be managed by the academic school so that the deans, the faculty, would be in charge working with the committee on what it is like to be a student in that school.

Shelley Carter-Rose says the new way of organizing orientation is bit more work for staff and faculty, but feels it makes the start of the students’ academic journey far more in depth.
