PRINCE GEORGE – It’s becoming a jewel in the city of Prince George – Connaught Hill Park. City officials and others were on hand today for a special ceremony to unveil a new pergola and garden. Prince George was one of 10 communities across the country to receive a $50,000 grant funded by CN and Tree Canada. The grant’s intended use is to enhance the communities natural environment, improve social well being and benefit residents who value green spaces. Mayor Yu said the city was grateful to be chosen and was thankful for CN’s continued support to the community.

“CN has been a great corporate citizen to to the city. 30 years ago they sponsored the CN Centre and they have continued to fund multiple programs and this particular program, we’re really grateful for. Only ten cities in Canada got chosen to have this program and $50,000 is a substantial amount of money for beautifying an area with the beautiful trees and shrubs. We’re really grateful that we have a such a good corporate citizen that is working with the city to beautify the city for us.” said Yu.

With $500,000 in grants allocated to various communities around Canada, CN Spokeswoman Natalie McDonald says this is a positive way to give back to the communities they engage with and develop stronger bonds.

“CN does a lot of this. We see a lot of projects where we work with communities to beautify the areas and for us, it’s very important for us to help our communities and do projects like this. We live in the communities, we’re a part of the communities and we run through our communities. We think it’s very important to be able to help and give back in this way.” said McDonald.

More then 250 plants and four trees are featured in the gardens with a promise of more to come throughout the community as a part of the City’s annual Tree Planting Greening the City project. Mayor Yu feels Connaught Hill will be a destination location for all those who want to experience the beauty the City has to offer.

“This is the place people will come to do their wedding photos and anniversary photos. This is a massive improvement for this particular section of Connaught Hill. We’re just so grateful that this has taken place and, I think in the years ahead Prince George will be known as a destination where you have to visit Connaught Hill to have your photo taken.” said Yu.

The Pergola at Connaught Hill Park can be booked for events on the City of Prince George website.
