PRINCE GEORGE — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has cleared the RCMP of any wrongdoing regarding a police-involved shooting that occurred on April 26, 2023.

Information provided by the RCMP states that police responded to a call alleging that a man was attacking others with a knife at a residence in the 2200-block of Oak Street of Prince George.

It is reported that when officers arrived, they attempted to take the man into custody. There was an interaction, and shots were fired by police after the man was tasered.

The man sustained eight gunshot injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

The report states in its conclusion that there were ample grounds for police to respond urgently to place the suspect under arrest when they located him.

The report points out that the suspect was attempting to flee and to break into private residences while armed with a knife and quickly moved towards officers with a knife which put officers at threat of death or grievous bodily harm.

“Nothing in the witness accounts, other that that of the suspect, supports an allegation that he was shot repeatedly while lying helpless on the ground. There is, in fact, no reliable evidence that any signficant force was used against the AP (suspect) one he was disabled.”
