Rebuild on hold

CrossRoads Brewing puts rebuild on hold until downtown safety improves

PRINCE GEORGE – During the City of Prince George’s Standing Committee on Public Safety meeting this week, the owner of CrossRoads Brewing announced that they have no current plans to rebuild until the downtown environment improves. This follows the devastating fire that demolished the building earlier this month. This statement caught some attendees of the meeting off guard, prompting others to call for action.

Mayor Simon Yu, who was at the public meeting, understands the owner’s hesitance to rebuild in the heart of the city.

“He expressed that his rebuild decision hinges on the improvement of public safety for the town in general. So we heard that, and we took that very, very seriously.”

Yu claims that while downtown public safety is gradually improving, incidents like the one that occurred at Crossroads serve as a reminder that improvements are still not good enough.

“ We need to do more. How much more? We need bail reform. We need to do better, triage, and separate the people in need.”

Troy McKenzie, the owner of The Black Clover, views Crossroads as one of the cornerstones of the downtown and believes that its closure could impact local businesses.

“ Competition is good. I have lots of friends that own hospitality venues downtown and do a great job. Some of them worked with me in the past. I think competition is healthy, and I think every business that we lose downtown is a negative situation.”
