CHILLIWACK — The Prince George Spruce Kings gave up five unanswered goals en route to a 6-2 defeat in their BCHL season opener Friday (Sept. 19) night.

The Kings led 2-1 after one period at the Chilliwack Coliseum as they struck twice in a three second span, but they were unable to hold on against the Chiefs, who fell to the Brooks Bandits in last season’s BCHL championship final.

Marcus Lougheed at 7:38 and Michael Denney at 7:41 scored for the Spruce Kings after Olivier Beaulieu struck first for the home team at 4:49 of the first period.

From there, it was all Chilliwack as second period goals from Darik Olson (shorthanded) and Ryan Small and third period goals from Jack Plandowski (power play), Ty Campbell, and Milan Mrsic gave the Chiefs the 6-2 win.

Colin Reay picked up the loss as the Spruce Kings netminder turned aside 23 of 29 shots he faced. Ben Laurette picked up the win for Chilliwack with 22 saves on 24 shots.

Things got a little feisty at the end as Spruce Kings captain Isaac Holt and Chilliwack forward Dustin Renas were assessed fighting majors and game misconducts with 3:47 left to play.

Renas was also assessed a tripping minor, while Nico Grabas (Chilliwack) and Carter Hesselgrave (Prince George) were penalized with misconducts during the same stoppage, while PG’s Dacen Campbell picked up a minor high-sticking penalty.

The Spruce Kings will aim to get into the win column in Surrey this Friday (Sept. 26) when the host the Eagles in their home opener at Kopar Memorial Arena.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
