Cougars complete weekend sweep of Portland

PRINCE GEORGE — A perfect opening weekend double-dip for the Prince George Cougars as they defeated the Portland Winterhawks 7-2 Saturday night.

Carson Carels got the party started for the home-side in the first, scoring his first on the season just past the midway point of the period. The Winterhawks would respond shortly after with Nathan Free besting Alexander Levshyn to tie the contest.

From there, it was all Prince George, with Kayden Lemire and Jett Lajoie bulging the twine before the end of the first. The Cougars added three more unanswered in the middle stanza, with Lee Shurgot, Lajoie, and Dmitri Yakutsenak making it 6-1 PG.

Portland would net a feel good powerplay goal in the third, but it wouldn’t much matter as the Cougars skated off with the 7-2 victory and a four point opening weekend.
