Crime a big focus for City of PG at Union of BC Municipalities

PRINCE GEORGE – The City of Prince George and city councillors are attending the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) this week, giving the City a chance to meet with the provincial government and official opposition, as well as other municipalities across the province.

“We have a very busy few days of advocacy meetings lined up. We’re set to talk about the concerns facing our community, some of our priorities include: how can we continue to look at things like bail reform? How do we continue to ensure that the supports are in our community for things such as crime prevention? How do we continue to advocate for the economic needs of our community? And how do we make sure that the voice of Prince George is heard by the provincial government?” Councillor Tim Bennett said.

Bennett said meetings are lined up with Premier David Eby and several ministers, as well as members of the official opposition BC Conservative Party, and the focus is to continue to “bang that drum loud” about issues surrounding Prince George.

“We need the province’s help to be able to address many of the concerns that may fall out of the City’s jurisdiction, but it’s the city’s problems that we need to address,” Bennett said.

The UBCM comes during the aftermath of the Crossroads Brewing fire downtown and the owner of Crossroads saying they have no plans on rebuilding until the downtown situation changes. Bennett says a letter written by the owners is part of the City’s advocacy plan to the provincial government to further demonstrate how urgently changes are needed.

“It is just a prime example of that message that we need to take to Victoria that some of the policies that are in place just aren’t working, and that we need supports here in our community to not just support business, but to support some of our most vulnerable,” Bennett said.

The UBCM is taking place in Victoria from September 22 to 26.
