Postal union launches strike as Ottawa moves to curb door-to-door mail
PRINCE GEORGE — The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is declaring a nationwide strike, hours after Procurement Minister Joel Lightbound announced door-to-door mail delivery will end for almost all Canadian households within the next decade. “In response to the government’s attack on our postal service and workers, effective immediately all CUPW members at Canada Post are on a nationwide strike,” the union wrote in a statement.
Pickets have gone up immediately, including in Prince George where CUPW 812 President Nicole Chouinard says workers are “upset, angry, but not surprised,” adding she thinks Canada Post and the federal government “are in bed.”
She estimates there are 200 CUPW members in Prince George, Vanderhoof, Fraser Lake, and Burns Lake.
