Provincial strike closes local liquor store

PRINCE GEORGE – After three weeks on strike The B.C General Employees Union is escalating strike action. The BCGEU pushed ahead with strike action Thursday with workers walking off the job at 37 BC liquor stores bringing the total to 65 stores province-wide. That includes the BC Liquor Store on Massey Drive. With the pressure now being applied to the government the countdown is officially on as inventory will start to dwindle shortly and it leaves many thinking is the hospitality industry being caught in the crossfire.

“The biggest concern would be that it carries on long enough to really impact our customers and their choices. If it affects liquor stores for a week or maybe two we can probably get through with some back stock to manage that. In this industry we often operate on fine margins. Being able to afford to hold on to much heavier inventory than you would normally can, can make it a lot tighter on the bank account for the business.” said The Dudley owner Eoin Foley.

The BCGEU is withholding labour to remind the government that its the public service workers who generate the revenue that funds community programs. As BCGEU President Paul Finch says the government has had ample time to agree to terms but now is the time to press the issue further.

“You know, we obviously feel greatly for the restaurant and hospitality industry. We’ve done our best through from the beginning of this strike to try and mitigate the impact on the industry. We spent over three weeks on strike without in our view, inconveniencing that industry. What we said from the beginning was we couldn’t do that indefinitely and this is squarely the responsibility of government.” said Finch.

Finch says the main sticking point continues to be wages with both sides far apart. As of Thursday, there was no plan for the sides to get back to the bargaining table.
