RCMP investigating viral fight video

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George RCMP is thanking the public for coming forward to report a viral fight video involving two local youths.

Police say the video appeared on social media channels over the weekend though RCMP say the video appears to have been taken down.

“We have had many reports, and even more now that this video has moved from messaging apps to social media, and we want to reassure the public that the persons involved have been identified and that we have an open investigation into this issue,” states Corporal Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP. “What police are asking the public to do now is to stop sharing the video.”

Cooper says while concerned citizens who witnessed the video did the right thing by contacting local police to report the fight so that it can be investigated, information sharing is a type of double-edged sword. In this case, further sharing of the video will only continue to re-victimize those involved.

“This is a good opportunity for parents to review with their teens and youth about what they can do when they see a fight, or other criminal behaviour, getting shared around on messaging apps and social media. Ensuring you have discussed issues such as Internet Safety, Sexting and Bullying are important aspects of allowing our young people to enter the online world,” notes Cooper.
