Offensive outburst powers Spruce Kings to weekend sweep over Chilliwack

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Spruce Kings completed a weekend sweep of the Chilliwack Chiefs in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

Saturday (Oct. 4) night in Prince George, the Kings scored five goals as they beat the Chiefs 5-2. Tai Ushio had two of those goals, while Ryan Wachtel, Michael Denney and Kazumo Sasaki also found the back of the net.

Colin Reay stopped 30 of 32 shots to pick up the win on Saturday.

Friday night at Kopar, the Spruce Kings got ten goals from nine different goalscorers as they blew away the Chiefs 10-1. They scored six goals in the second period and added three more in the third.

Sasaki scored twice on Friday while Wachtel, Denney, Mikey Tkac, Nick Metelkin, Matic Perčič, Mathis Laplante, Marcus Lougheed, and Carter Hesselgrave had singles. Ushio and Trent LeDrew had three assists each, while Metelkin, Perčič, and Lougheed added a pair each.

Prince George goaltender Ryder Green earned the win on Friday as he turned aside 25 of 26 shots.

In all the Kings scored 15 goals this weekend to improve to 3-2 in the standings. They’re in second place in the BCHL’s Coastal East Division behind the 4-0 Coquitlam Express.

Next up for the Kings is a game on Tuesday next week (Oct. 14), against the Sherwood Park crusaders in Abbotsford followed by a game in Chilliwack against the Brooks Bandits on Oct. 15.

Their next home games at Kopar Memorial Arena are scheduled for Oct. 18 and 19 against the Nanaimo Clippers.
