Quentin Avenue residents unite to restore safety in their neighbourhood

PRINCE GEORGE – The efforts of a longtime resident have led to positive changes in her neighbourhood. With the support of others, consistent calls to officials have made the area feel safer.

Jackie Rioux has lived on Quentin Avenue for over twenty years. However, for the past year, she and some of her neighbours have felt that their safety was at risk due to unusual behaviour and criminal activity occurring at a nearby residence.

Rioux and her neighbours banded together to document the situation and call the authorities.

Rioux, who shares a fence with the problematic neighbour, called the police when she began to notice individuals overdosing on drugs.

When you have what is suspected to be drug activity and drug-induced individuals, they don’t have the mental capacity to operate in polite society.”

Longtime resident

While speaking with Rioux, we observed city officials on-site clearing debris from the property. Both the city and the RCMP urge residents to report any bylaw violations or criminal activities, as this helps advance ongoing investigations.

Rioux emphasized that the actions of residents have made a significant impact, contributing to positive changes in the community.

Follow-up statement from the City of Prince George:

Whenever neighbours cannot informally resolve bylaw issues, the City of Prince George encourages residents to call bylaw services at 311, use the City of PG app, or email 311@princegeorge.ca to submit a service request and allow officers to investigate.

City bylaw officers will attend to educate homeowners who are in contravention of City bylaws and escalate to enforcement action to encourage compliance with municipal bylaws when necessary. In some cases, properties that are attended regularly by bylaw and RCMP are deemed a nuisance property and require more time to address. If the nuisance activities do not stop despite orders from Council, the City may recover the cost of abating the nuisance, or causing the nuisance to be abated, under the City of Prince George Nuisance Abatement Bylaw 8940, 2018.
