Regional district to seek legal advice on CUPE’s latest move

PRINCE GEORGE —Update: The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) says that starting October 27, Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill will move to a temporary schedule during rotating job action and it will be open everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All other Regional District transfer stations are currently following their regular operating hours.

If job action escalates and regular operating hours are not possible, the RDFFG says the following essential services designation from the BC Labour Relations Board will be in place:

  • Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill will be open Tuesday to Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm
  • Valemount Regional Transfer Station will be open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 9 am to 5 pm
  • Mackenzie Select Waste Landfill and Regional Transfer Station will be open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 am to 5pm

Other Regional District transfer stations will be impacted if job action escalates and their reduced operating hours will be posted on the RDFFG’s website.

Earlier: According to the City of Prince George, CUPE’s decision to withdraw services hasn’t affected garbage collection.

Earlier: The strike by unionized workers in the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is intensifying.

At 6:45 a.m. Friday morning (Oct.24), CUPE notified the regional district that their members will withdraw services from the main office at 155 George Street, the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill, Shelly Regional Transfer Station, Cummings Road Regional Transfer Station, Mackenzie Select Waste Landfill and Regional Transfer Station, Vanway Regional Transfer Station and Valemount Regional Transfer Station for the day. Unionized workers will also not collect fees at some regional district sites for the day.

The Foothills landfill is included in the BC Labour Relations Board essential services designation and as a result, the regional district is pursuing legal advice on CUPE 1699’s withdrawal of services and will provide an update as soon as possible.

For residents, this means:

  • The 155 George Street building is open today. Residents can also contact the Regional District for assistance at 250-960-4400 or district@rdffg.bc.ca.
  • The following sites are closed for today:
    • Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill
    • Shelley Regional Transfer Station
    • Cummings Road Regional Transfer Station
    • Mackenzie Select Waste Landfill and Regional Transfer Station
    • Vanway Regional Transfer Station
    • Valemount Regional Transfer Station
  • No fees will be collected from residents today for:

CKPG News has reached out to the City of Prince George to find out what effect the closure may have on garbage collection Friday but has yet to hear back.
