PRINCE GEORGE — Sawyer Mayes scored late in the third period to lift the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 4-3 win over the Prince George Cougars Saturday (Oct. 25) night at the CN Centre.

The result meant the two teams spilt their weekend doubleheader as the Cougars took Friday’s meeting 6-3.

Just like Friday, the Thunderbirds raced to a 2-0 lead courtesy goals from Brendan Rudolph and Braeden Cootes. Unlike Friday’s game though, it was the Cougars who scored the next two as Terik Parascak and Jett Lajoie evened the score at 2-2.

Cootes, the Vancouver Canucks prospect, restored Seattle’s one goal lead at 17:28 of the second period. He also chipped in with an assist on Rudolph’s opening goal.

Not to be outdone, Kooper Gizowski evened the score on the power play early in the third period. The 20-year-old former Lethbridge Hurricane who was claimed off waivers in the summer is tied for the WHL goal scoring lead with 11.

The Thunderbirds had a little bit left in the tank as Mayes, a Salmon Arm native, potted in the rebound after Colton Gerrior fired a shot on Joshua Ravensbergen’s net with less than four minutes to play.

Ravensbergen, who came off in relief of Alexander Levshyn, made 17 saves on 19 shots. Levshyn stopped eight of 10 shots before he left the game with an apparent leg injury with 16 seconds left in the opening period.

Grayson Malinoski stopped 19 of 22 shots to pick up the win for the Thunderbirds, who improve to 5-7, good for 10th in the Western Conference. Prince George is still second with an 8-4 record.

Up next for the Cougars is a Halloween night (Oct. 31) game in Portland against the Winterhawks followed by a rematch against the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent, WA on Saturday.

The Cougars will also play the Vancouver Giants on Sunday (Nov. 2) to complete the three game weekend.
