PRINCE GEORGE – Bianca Encina – Prosser and her two children six year old Roman and sixteen month old Viviana are survivors of domestic violence. Following a traumatic incident in July, the family lost their safe home and have faced major emotional and financial struggles and UNBC is supporting her as she moves ahead.

“There’s no handbook for how to get through something like this. There’s not really any hope for the kids. We talk a lot about domestic violence and how it affects women but this is really a children’s issue that affects, babies, little guys, and changes the their outlook of how they feel about themselves, maybe for the rest of their lives.” said Encina-Prosser.

The UNBC Timberwolves Student Athlete Society’s annual MVP campaign selects a community member facing significant challenges each year to be the focus of their fundraising efforts through a bottle drive, dodgeball tournament, and three on three basketball tournament.

“When I received a phone call that my family was nominated I was stunned. I didn’t know how to react and I still don’t know. It’s so meaningful to know that there’s people in the community who care, not just about my family but about domestic violence and the impacts that it has on society”. said Encina-Prosser.

It’s something that we haven’t really done before in terms of, what she’s been going through. We think that it’s really important to shed a light on it, given the stigma around domestic violence and mental health.” added the Vice-President of the Timberwolves Student Athlete Society Amrit Manak.

Left picking up the pieces as Bianca helps her children cope with what has happened is difficult but she is determined to move forward and is grateful for the support.

“My children have personally been impacted by this and then knowing that the community at large is looking out for them and saying, hey we care.” said Encina-Prosser.

The first of three fundraiser for the MVP campaign is this Sundays basketball tournament at the Northern Sports Centre starting at 10 am. If you would like to help this family in need click here
