Baukin leads UNBC men to first-ever home court win over Alberta

PRINCE GEORGE — Evgeny Baukin poured in a game-high 30 points Friday (Oct. 31) night to lead the UNBC Timberwolves to a 78-77 win over the Alberta Golden Bears.

Baukin also had 10 rebounds to lead the TWolves to first win of the 2025-26 Canada West basketball season. They’re 1-1 after last Sunday’s defeat to the UBCO Heat.

Justin Sunga (12) and Miller Davies (10) also finished with double-digit point totals for the hosts. Isaac Simon had 20 in response for the 2-1 Bears, who suffered their first defeat of the season.

Alberta led 44-31 at the half, but they were outscored by the TWolves in the third and fourth quarters. UNBC poured in 27 of its 78 points in the final 10 minutes.

While there were several lead changes in the final quarter, Miller Davies sunk two free throws with less than one-second remaining to hand the home team their win over Alberta in Prince George after Kyle Varner’s buzzer-beating effort fell short.

In women’s basketball action, the TWolves dropped an 83 – 35 decision to the Pandas to remain winless at 0-2. Alberta improved to 3-0 with the win.

Hazel Phillips and Viktoriia Filatova had nine points each for UNBC. Filatova also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.Jayden Tanner and McKinley Penninga finished the night with a team-high 11 points for Alberta, while Mishynn Miller grabbed seven rebounds for Alberta.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday (Nov. 1) afternoon at the Northern Sport Centre with the women’s game scheduled to tip off at 5:00 p.m. followed by the men at 7:00 p.m.
