Cougars begin six-game road trip with defeat in Portland

PORTLAND, OR — The Prince George Cougars opened a six-game road trip with a 6-2 setback at the hands of the Portland Winterhawks Friday (Oct. 31) at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

It’s the Cougars first road defeat of the season and they’re fell to 8-5, which is good for third in the Western Conference.

The Winterhawks scoree three in the first period though Nathan Free, Carter Sotheran, and Finn Spehar, with the first two goals coming on the power play.

Portland extended their lead to 4-0 at 3:57 of the second though Jake Gustafson before the Cougars stuck twice.

Arsenii Anisimov scored his third of the campaign – a power play marker at 5:52 – before Corbin Vaughan buried a rebound at 15:03 to make it 4-2. Cougars forward Kooper Gizowski picked up an assist on that second goal to extend his point streak to 13 games.

However, there was no comeback to be had as the Winterhawks added a pair of goals in the final frame courtesy Reed Brown and Alex Weiermair.

Cougars netminder Joshua Ravensbergen picked up the loss as he allowed six goals on 28 shots in 51:09 of work. Brady Holtvogt came on in relief after the Winterhawks six goal and stopped all six shots he faced in his career regular-season appearance in the WHL.

Portland goaltender Ondej Štěbeták stopped 33 of 35 shots to earn the win.

The Cougars are back in action this evening as they face the Seattle Thunderbirds at the accesso ShoWare Centre in Kent, Washington. They’ll return north of the border to play the Vancouver Giants in a Sunday (Nov. 2) afternoon game.
