Growing job actions

PRINCE GEORGE – Residents throughout the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George are increasingly experiencing the impact of CUPE Local 1699’s growing job actions. As of 8:30 on Tuesday morning, union members have broadened their strike activities, leading to the suspension of several essential services.

Early Tuesday morning, the line of vehicles at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill was longer than usual. The regional district says on its website that residents should expect delays at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill and all Regional District transfer stations, as ongoing job actions by CUPE 1699 are affecting operations. The union says they will continue to plan job actions until a settlement is reached with the district.

“We’ve decided to stop triaging IT tickets, we stop taking the temperature of certain landfill operations and to stop working scheduled overtime or hours outside of our regularly scheduled hours.” – Mitch Guitard, CUPE 1699

On Monday, the Regional District of Fraser Fort-George publicly released its latest offer to CUPE 1699. However, the union did not accept the offer of an 18.5% wage increase over five years.

“The numbers that they’ve made are baseless projections and cherry-picked numbers that aren’t in line with municipal comparators, and we’re disappointed that they’re trying this tactic.” – Mitch Guitard, CUPE 1699

According to the union, neither side has spoken since mediation ended in the summer.

“We have not spoken since mediation failed. In August, I had a brief discussion with the CAO, a couple of weeks ago. The path to resolution was no compromise, only to accept the regional district settlement.” – Mitch Guitard, CUPE 1699

CKPG News contacted the Regional District for a response; they said they have nothing further to add at this time.
