PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Spruce Kings were hard at work Wednesday afternoon making adjustments for this weekend’ s home stand doubleheader against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The Kings are fresh off a home split which saw them take Saturday’s game 4 -1 against Salmon Arm but drop Sunday’s game to Langley 4-2. The Kings currently sit second in their division with a 7-6 record with consistency being the main goal moving forward.

“I think for the most part I felt like we were the better team but obviously not happy with the letdown at the start of the third period on Sunday. We expect better from our group and we have to come out with a little more energy. If I went back and looked at the games as a whole, I thought we competed hard. We did a lot of great things but now we got to put the product on the ice for 60 minutes.” said Spruce Kings Head Coach Brad Tesink.

A huge driving factor for the Spruce Kings has been the play of Kazumo Sasaki who poured in 1 goal and 4 assists over the weekend to take top spot in the BCHL scoring race with 22 points. Along with linemate Tai Ushio the duo are taking the league by storm and certainly it’s exciting to be scoring at a career high clip but you would’nt know that talking to him.

“It doesn’t doesn’t matter for me. I’m here to win hockey games and I want to spend all the all the time I can with this group this year. The job doesn’t change for me. I want to do everything I can to win a hockey game and I’m bringing everything I can every night.” said Sasaki.

With Alberni on deck this weekend the team is fine tuning their game in preparation for their final homestand before hitting the road for a difficult 5 games away from Kopar. This homestand will go a long way to improving confidence on the road where the Kings have a 1-3 record.

“I think Alberni’s going to come in and be a heavy team to play against. They are an older group. Again, for us, it’s fine tuning our details and worrying about our side of the puck right now. Were working on being heavier on pucks, being harder to play against, and then obviously a lot of stick details throughout the course of our game. We’re going to get our scoring opportunities and we need to limit what the other teams do when they get up here and that is going to benefit us in the long run.” said Tesink.
