PRINCE GEORGE – The grand opening of the new playground at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park was celebrated Friday morning, as dozens of children got to enjoy everything the playground has to offer for the first time.

“These are the happy moments. These are the ones that make you smile and remember, and I know our elders are really smiling down on us watching these kids play,” Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dolleen Logan said.

“The moment, for me, to know that I think we did well was just the kids’ reaction. This is the moment that I was waiting for,” said Michael Le Morvan, the playground’s project manager with the City of Prince George.

This new playground is significantly bigger than the old Rotary Playground, which it replaced, and is packed full of ways to represent our community. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Both the Fraser and Nechako River being part of the design.
  • Mr. PG
  • The Little Prince Train
  • A fire engine to represent the classic fire engine of the old playground.

“We have animals that actually are around our city. We have a moose, we have bears, we have deer, we have sturgeon. You can see a structures like the bridge, you have the Little Prince and many other little things that will be good for the kids to explore,” Le Morvan said.

“As a dad of four kids, I know what I’m doing this weekend. We’re going to be down here checking out the park. But this is just such a great addition to one of our premier parks,” added Prince George City Councillor Tim Bennett.

The location of Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park is especially significant for the playground, as it not only is in a premier destination for visitors in Prince George, the historical and cultural significance to the Lheidli T’enneh also means a lot.

“It’s our gathering place, so it’s a welcoming place, and what a better way to welcome than a playground, because it’s an amazing playground. You’ve got to come down and see this, I was in awe when I walked up,” Logan said.

This project was intially budgeted for $3 million dollars, but Bennett says the project was $250 thousand under budget, a fact the City is very proud of.
