Buzzer-beater three sinks UNBC men as women falls just short of first win of the season

PRINCE GEORGE — Jack Vandenberg hit a buzzer-beating three pointer to lift the Trinity Western Spartans to a 65-64 win over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday (Nov. 8) night in Prince George.

Vandenberg’s fifth three pointer of the night gave the Spartans their second win of the season as they earned the weekend split with UNBC. Vandenberg finished with 18 points and seven assists.

Timberwolves forward Evgeny Baukin, who entered the weekend as the top scorer in Canada, poured in 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

UNBC is now 2-3 on the season while TWU is 2-4.

Elsewhere, the UNBC women fell 55-53 to the Spartans at the Northern Sport Centre.

Viktoriia Filatova matched her career best with 26 points on the night, while Aurora Cabrera pulled down 16 rebounds, added three blocks and had nine points in defeat.

The 0-5 TWolves are still searching for that elusive first win of this Canada West season. TWU is 4-2.

Next up for the TWolves are their first road games of the season, as they head to Kelowna to face the UBCO Heat on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15.
