CNC program cuts

CNC Students’ Union believes program cuts could’ve been “better handled”

PRINCE GEORGE – As the College of New Caledonia braces for potential program suspensions, on top of eight programs that have already been cut, the College’s Students’ Union believes the process could have been better handled.

“We think that the college could have done a better job at reaching out proactively and just being transparent to the affected shareholders,” said the Union’s Executive Director Navi Brar.

Brar says he knows that post-secondary institutions across the country have been impacted by the federal government’s changes to international student laws, so he knows CNC is not alone. However, he does believe the college “over relied” on international students, leading to the funding challenges now.

“The funding is the bigger issue from the government. Over relying on international students led to over relying on international students, and because international students are not coming in the country, that is why we are facing these issues,” said Brar.

The college has teach out plans in place, so students currently enrolled in programs set to be cut can still finish those programs, although Brar says some uncertainty still remains for students on how exactly this will be implemented.

“The students got confused because the programs got canceled, and what if a student fails an exam or something like that? Then they have to reapply. And the teaching out plan is already in, the college is already working on the teaching out plan, but still, the students get affected because they cannot continue with the same course in here,” Brar said.

Brar added the Union has been in discussions with college leadership, although it’s still too early to say anything about specific plans, and how those plans could potentially impact students.
