PRINCE GEORGE – Now that a deal has been ratified between the Regional District of Fraser- Fort George and the Canadian Union of Public Employees 1699, will the City of Prince George’s garbage collection return to a normal Monday to Friday schedule? The City says it expects that to happen soon.

“We hope to get back to our regular schedule December 1,” said the City’s Supervisor of Parks and Solid Waste Jim Litzen.

“We’ll have orange zone collection tomorrow (Saturday, November 21), and we’ll resume our regular scheduled Tuesday next week. Orange Zone will be back on to its Monday schedule continuing on,” he continued.

Litzen expects this to be welcome news for some who may have had some challenges navigating a modified schedule.

“There were some challenges when we went from a Tuesday to Saturday schedule. Residents who were expecting that garbage to be picked up on the Mondays and it didn’t weren’t fully informed that their garbage would be picked up on the Saturday. So there were some missed carts and some calls were received about that,” he said.

Litzen added it will likely be good news for some City staff as well, who will enjoy a return to normalcy.

“I think they’re looking forward to getting back to working Monday to Friday. We have staff with children that have been having to come back to work on Saturdays, so it’s kind of affected their schedules as well,” he said.

The five year deal between CUPE 1699 and the Regional District was reached with the help of a mediator.
