WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Taseko Mines says a contract worker has been killed in an accident at the Gibraltar Mine near McLeese Lake, northeast of Williams Lake.

In a statement, the company says the accident happened in an active mining area around 5:00 p.m. Friday (Nov. 21) night. While it has not said what happened, the company notes no other injuries were reported.

“We are saddened to report the loss of a valued colleague at Gibraltar, and offer our deepest condolences to affected family, co-workers and friends,” Taseko Vice President of Corporate Affairs Sean Magee said in the statement.

Taseko says the site has been secured and all mining activity has been halted. According to the company, both the RCMP and the B.C Coroners Service are on-site investigating.

It also said the BC Ministry of Mining & Critical Minerals has been notified about the accident, and that Gibraltar personnel are cooperating fully with the investigation.

“Our primary concern is the health, safety and well-being of our employees,” Magee added.

“Accordingly, we have halted all activity at Gibraltar until the accident can been fully investigated, and will make counselling and support services available to Gibraltar employees affected by this tragic event.”
