PRINCE GEORGE – The annual Festival of Trees in Prince George has officially moved into the CN Centre, marking a significant new chapter for one of the community’s most beloved holiday traditions following 31 years at the Prince George Civic Centre. The move to the larger venue promises a bigger and more expansive experience for visitors for this years “Whoville” themed festival.

“A bigger venue for Festival of Trees means every area can expand and we have done just that. Our volunteer force has come out in full force this year. Every area has grown exponentially, and we’re so excited to see it come together.” said CEO of Spirit of the North Aimee Cassie.

For over three decades the festival has been a cornerstone of community giving and has raised millions of dollars to support vital healthcare equipment and programs at the University Hospital of Northern BC. This year’s cause will ensure residents receive quality care closer to home.

“So this year we’re fundraising for an indoor bronchial ultrasound system and what that’s used for is to diagnose certain types of cancer. It’s a system that we don’t currently have at UHNBC.” said Cassie.

The system comes at a cost of $600,000 and is used to cut down on the diagnostic time of certain types of cancers. Currently there are 10-15 patients per week going to the lower mainland to get this 10 minute procedure done and this equipment would eliminate the travel, cost and stress while keeping patients close to their support system.

“I was diagnosed almost a year ago with lung cancer and I’ve been going through treatment all this year. The work that’s done and the fundraising that’s done has allowed me to stay at home. I haven’t had to travel for any treatment at all, which is absolutely huge because my support network is here.” said 13 year Festival of Trees volunteer Sharon Willoughby.

The Festival of Trees opens this Wednesday with Scotiabank Seniors Day and runs through Sunday evening.
