RCMP warns residents about porch pirates during holiday season
PRINCE GEORGE- With the Holiday season arriving comes a higher volume in home deliveries and with this increase comes package thefts. The Prince George RCMP have some tips and tricks to make sure those presents make it under the tree.
” There’s a few strategies that people can implement to try and help mitigate the theft of packages from your doorstep. One of the first things we could recommend would be switching where you’re getting your deliveries made to. So maybe you can pick it up at a P.O. box or even perhaps your workplace just so there’s a person available to accept them, and kind of take them in or else ask a neighbor.” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper of the Prince George RCMP.
Cooper adds that this type of crime is a crime of opportunity and it’s very rarely pre-planned. The person sees the package and impulsively decides to grab it and take it with them so if that opportunity is removed there will be less of these incidents. Other tips that were suggested by the RCMP are to invest in a proper lockbox if you have an area large enough or just simply provide alternate delivery instructions to drivers to place your package somewhere out of sight. RCMP also add to stay vigilant and if you notice anything suspicious report it.
“We’ve been reminding residents that the best way to help deter crime is to report it. If you see this type of crime in progress definitely call our non-emergency line and let the dispatchers know which direction the person has gone, what they were wearing and what kind of package they took, so we can keep an eye out for it. If this is something that you realize has happened to you after the fact make sure to use our non-emergency line or online crime reporting tool to still report those incidences.” said Cooper.
