PRINCE GEORGE — Tai Ushio had a four point night – which included the game-winning goal – as the Prince George Spruce Kings beat the Victoria Grizzlies 5-4 Frirday (Dec. 5) at Kopar Memorial Arena.

Like the Cougars, the Spruce Kings erased a two goal first period deficit en route to victory against the team from the provincial capital.

Dennison Monahan and Artur Gross had the Grizzlies up 2-0 after one period, though Mason Loewen made it a one-goal game early in the second. Victoria, however, retook the two-goal led just about a minute later through Michael Dowdall.

Then it was all Spruce Kings as they scored four unanswered goals to lead 5-3. Ben Vreugdenhil and a pair from Marcus Lougheed had Prince George up 4-3 after 40 minutes of hockey.

Ushio gave the Spruce Kings a two-goal cushion early in the third period, which came in use as Trae Johnson scored with the extra attacker on to bring Victoria back to within one goal.

Colin Reay picked up with the win with 28 saves off 32 shots, while Casimir Weckstrom took the loss with a 19 save effort.

The two teams are back in action at 6:00 p.m. tonight for the Drop the Gloves and Sock it to Em game in support of St. Vincent de Paul.
