Spruce Kings Weekend Preview

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Spruce Kings head into this weekends doubleheader with a lot on the line. Approaching the midway point of the season the Kings currently sit in second in the Coastal East Division two points behind Coquitlam and one point ahead of Langley and both happen to be their opponents this weekend. The Kings won all four of the games on their homestand and look to keep the momentum going on the road as they continue to push up the standings.

“I think any time you face an opponent that you’re tight with in the standings it brings a little extra incentive. One through four in our division right now is extremely tight, every team’s usually winning and if you don’t win games on the weekend you seem to fall behind a little bit. In order to keep pace and go to where we want to go come April we need to challenge ourselves this weekend to get good results.” said Spruce Kings Head Coach Brad Tesink.

With all the player movement surrounding the Kings recently the team has adjusted and positioned themselves to make a run at the top of the division. With these two division matchups ahead the players know the importance but maintain its business as usual.

“Obviously means a lot more with these close matchups in our division and we’re just trying to win both games and get four points. Were just focused on ourselves mainly and each night just playing our game.” said Kings forward Jackson Froysland.

One key to the team’s success this season has been the special teams with the Spruce Kings currently boasting the leagues second best powerplay to go with a respectable penalty kill. Both units will be relied upon heavily this weekend.

“I think discipline is huge. Staying out of the penalty box and limiting offensive chances for both opponents is going to be big in our game. When we do have the opportunity on the powerplay, we’ve seen a variety of success with our units. That seems to be constantly evolving depending on who’s out there on any given weekend. They’re doing a great job, working within our structure and within our system and you’re seeing the results on a weekend by weekend basis.” said Tesink.

The Prince George Spruce Kings face division leader Coquitlam Friday night before taking on Langley Saturday to wrap up a two game road trip.
