Rustad warns Conservative Party of BC divisions could trigger NDP snap election

Dec 15, 2025 | 3:45 PM

PRINCE GEORGE -Just under two weeks after stepping down as the leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, John Rustad is concerned that internal divisions could jeopardize the party’s momentum. Amidst this turmoil, he fears that the NDP might take advantage of the situation and call for a snap election.

John Rustad highlights that months of internal strife within the Conservative caucus have finally boiled over, jeopardizing the party’s credibility as a viable contender for government.

“At the end of the day, it can’t be about me. It needs to be about a government-in-waiting that is ready to replace this NDP. And the damage that’s being done in B.C.”

Rustad expresses concern about the ongoing rift within the party, which he believes has persisted since he resigned as leader.

Rustad says several current MLAs are considering leadership bids, as are people from outside.

Rustad suggests that NDP Premier David Eby is waiting for the right opportunity to call a snap election, taking advantage of the fact that the Conservatives currently lack a leader.

“They are looking for a window to call an election, and what better time to do it than when you have a party without a leader? And so, you know, if I was David Eby, if the polls are there for him. They’re going to drop the writ.”
