When plow trucks slide off, Cariboo roads demand attention

PRINCE GEORGE – A growing issue on Cariboo roads has residents urging swift action. Dangerous ice accumulation and inadequate road maintenance have made travel in the region perilous, leading to school bus cancellations and raising serious safety concerns. MLA Sheldon Clare is pressing the province to step in.

Rural roads are essential for people living in remote areas, connecting them to vital services and emergency care that can be quite a distance away. Clare has raised alarms about worsening road conditions throughout the Cariboo and the Central Interior, emphasizing that winter weather is significantly impacting safety and causing widespread concern.

Clare has been in talks with the three road contractors responsible for maintenance in his riding regarding the state of winter roads. He notes that school bus cancellations have become all too common and describes them as unacceptable.

According to Clare School District 28 (Quesnel), there have already been four district-wide cancellations and two partial route cancellations since late November. Clare insists that residents deserve dependable services for their tax contributions and is calling on the province to take a more proactive stance.

Having directly addressed these concerns with Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth, Clare remains committed to advocating for safer roads throughout the North.

“Just a few days ago, when I was heading down to Quesnel, there was literally an Emcon plow truck in the ditch that had rolled over just past the Cottonwood River crossing. The roads are bad, and if you see the plow trucks in the ditch, you know they’re really bad. “
