SPRUCE GROVE, ALTA. — The Prince George Spruce Kings got within a goal late in the third period, but they ultimately fell 4-2 to the Spruce Grove Saints in Friday (Jan. 2) night action in the BCHL.

The Spruce Kings struck first after Marcus Lougheed deflected an Evan Bellamy shot from the point as Prince George took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission at the Thompson Family Arena.

They then gave up three second period goals on the special teams and weren’t able to claw their way back. Declan Waddick and Tre Peck scored power play goals for the Saints while Spencer Rheaume scored shorthanded off the rush to put the Saints up 3-1 after 40 minutes.

With the goaltender pulled, Tai Ushio scored a power play goal at 18:32 of the third period to make it 3-2. He tipped the puck past Joseph Quintilio’s pad and over the line, and the goal stood after a short review.

The Saints sealed the win about 40 seconds later after Brandon Funk restored the two goal lead.

The 16-2-1-0 Spruce Kings continue on the road tonight as they play the Bulldogs in Blackfalds. Puck drop from the Eagle Builders Centre is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. B.C. time.

The Spruce Kings will play their first home games of 2026 the following weekend, Jan. 9 and 10, against the Langley Rivermen.
